The year in review

The gas market in 2025

9 January 2026 – Last year Germany consumed 2.2% more gas than the year before. Most of the natural gas imported came by pipeline from Norway. The natural gas imported via the LNG terminals in Wilhelmshaven, Brunsbüttel, Lubmin and Mukran made up 10.3% of all Germany’s gas imports.

Gas consumption

Germany consumed a total of 864 TWh of gas in 2025, which was 2.2% more than in 2024 (845 TWh). Household and commercial customers accounted for 40% of Germany’s total consumption and industrial customers for 60%.

Gas consumption largely depends on the temperature, especially in the case of household and commercial customers, and varies according to the time of year. Consumption falls in the summer months and increases during the heating season in winter. Total gas consumption was nearly 11.9% below the average for the years 2018 to 2021.

Temperatures

Temperatures in 2025 averaged 10.0°C, similar to the average for 2018 to 2021. Temperatures in January were 0.1°C, in February 0.8°C and in March 1.3°C above the monthly averages. By contrast, October was 0.5°C, November 0.3°C and December 0.1°C lower than the monthly averages.

Gas flows

The total volume of natural gas imported into Germany via Germany’s LNG terminals in Wilhelmshaven, Brunsbüttel, Lubmin und Mukran in 2025 was 106 TWh. This represents 10.3% of Germany’s total gas imports. According to data from the German Association of Energy and Water Industries (BDEW), around 96% of Germany’s LNG imports in 2025 came from the USA.

According to preliminary figures, the total volume of natural gas imported into Germany in 2025 was 1,031 TWh (2024: 864 TWh).

Gas exports to neighbouring countries were considerably higher than in the previous year. The total volume of gas exported in 2025 was 221 TWh (2024: 89 TWh). The largest share of exports went to Austria with 46%, while just under 26% went to Czechia and around 13% to Switzerland.

Gas production

Germany has its own natural gas fields on a small scale. These sites produced 34 TWh of natural gas in 2025 (2024: 36 TWh). In addition, around 10 TWh of biogas was injected into the network in 2025, according to preliminary figures.

Storage levels

The natural gas storage facilities are used for balancing out seasonal fluctuations, reconciling a relatively constant supply of natural gas with a gas demand that varies according to the time of year.

The Gas Storage Level Requirements Ordinance sets the following storage level targets for 1 November: a standard target of 80% for all storage facilities, with the exception of the facilities in Bad Lauchstädt, Frankenthal, Hähnlein, Rehden, Stockstadt and Uelsen, to which a target of 45% applies. These targets result in an overall storage level across all German gas storage facilities of 70%, which is also sufficient to comply with European requirements. The target across all storage facilities in Germany was met.
