Supplier switching is the process of allocating a final customer's market location to a new supplier. Moving home is a special form of supplier switching. An involuntary supplier switch can occur when the previous supplier is insolvent or the supplier terminates the contract. Generally any consumer can switch suppliers. The insolvency of two major electricity suppliers in 2018 and 2020 can be recognised as a special insolvency effect. In principle, any consumer of an electricity supplier can switch suppliers.
A switch of contract must be distinguished from a switch of supplier. A contract switch takes place within a provider, whereas a supplier switch involves switching to another provider.
